Am I part of the problem? Or part of the solution?

Free individual math classes offered.

As a business owner and resident in Ripley County I am surprised and saddened at the lack of basic math skills of many graduated students.

Not just me, I hear this from other business owners and many individuals. The lack of math skills may be experienced daily as purchases are made. Seldom is your change “counted back” to you. Cashiers don’t know how to and part of the blame is on our poor management practices.

I talk to construction owners that are frustrated because many applicants CANNOT read a tape measure (math and fractions).

I have ads out “seeking shop help” MUST understand basic math - add - subtract - multiply and divide. Here are some examples of interviews from high school graduates: I ask what is 9x7= ? Answers given: 61, no 64, no 62 - no it’s 61. (wrong) Another reply was - blank stare - so I asked what is 8x5?= reply “I didn’t learn that math.” Another reply, “Holy crap I didn’t think you would really ask.” I think the one that bothered me the most was the reply to how many dimes in a dollar? I don’t know.

Upon reflection, if you don’t know 9x7, 6x8, 7x7 then it probably is a tough question. If you don’t do fractions and can’t read a tape measure, the question is difficult.

I don’t understand the modern school theology of Leave No Child Behind. (That really means to dumb it down) or participation ribbons for all which means why excel?

A partial solution is I offer free classes to any individual that wants to improve their math skills.

Any age, in school or out. Basic math, add, subtract, multiply, divide, fractions, decimals, how to read a tape measure, how to make change up to 2x(+4)=? type questions.

I will tailor sessions to your needs. What do I get out of it? I would rather be a part of the solution than part of the problem.
