To The Editor ... Doniphan Resident Asks Residents To Contact Rep. Smith For Help With Citizenship
Dear Editor:
Prayer request. The matter of Derrick Braschler’s U.S. citizenship, due to his adoption, came up in church today. His father, Steve, explained how unknown by him, the federal government apparently LOST Derrick’s adoption paperwork nearly 20 years ago.
The Braschler family has been working hard for the last six years to resolve this issue when they became aware. They have spent massive amounts of money through lawyers and have contacted the Office of U.S. Representative Jason Smith.
Because Derrick was adopted at 15 months of age in Guatemala, as opposed to being an illegal alien, he is not allowed to enlist in the military or attend college. This is in spite of living and growing up in Ripley County. He is a graduate of Doniphan High School having played football on the first varsity team in decades. After graduation he could not attend college due to this citizenship issue.
A recent text was received from Congressman Jason Smith, it stated that it would be another six to 16 months before his citizenship issue is resolved. This is completely UNACCEPTABLE!
Think about this, the United States government has had nearly 20 years to process this paperwork for citizenship and it has not been accomplished due to some bureaucratic foul up. I sincerely urge Representative Smith to summon the heads of the responsible agencies to explain in person and in detail why they need months instead of days to resolve this issue.
Everybody knows and loves Derrick. This lack of his citizenship has done a great disservice to him, his family, and this community. I ask that everyone reading this article to please pray for this man and his family. Please take a moment to sent a text, an email, or call Jason Smith’s office to emphasize the need for a quick resolution of this issue.
Sincerest regards,
David W. Shifflett
