The First Champions Of The Lady Royals Classic

As the Doniphan Donettes play for the championship tonight against Dexter at the 24th Annual Lady Royals Christmas Classic at Broseley, letís look back at the first tournament in 1997, then known as the Twin Rivers New Yearís Classic. Doniphan entered as the first seed among the tournamentís 12 teams (thereís 16 teams today) but in the semifinals found itself trailing 30-24 against New Madrid Co. Central. The Donettes turned it around to claim a 55-48 win. In the championship game, the Donettes battled unbeaten East Carter and held on to claim a 71-55 win. Pictured above (from left) are head coach Jimbo Blackwell, assistant coach Anita Carrens, Ruby Samuel, Christian Netherland, Ashley Wright, Stacey Maples, Amy Crader, Bethany Orendorff, Chera Schrimsher, Priscilla Aldrich, Lori Rush and assistant coach Bob MaGuffee. Crader and Orendorff were named to the all-tournament team.
