Volunteers Needed For Current River Heritage Days

Tuesday, May 17, 2022

Plans are under way for the Heritage Days event on Sept. 23-24 and we need help.

If you have an idea for a pioneer activity or if you have a special skill that you would like to share with the crowds please contact Julie Braschler at the Current River Heritage Museum, (573) 996-5298.

We want a wide variety of arts, crafts, games and activities that would have been utilized in early Ripley County life. From showing students how clothes were cleaned on a wash board to candle making, if you have a pioneer talent to share then we would love to have you take part in the two-day event.

Pedro is coming back! After many excited requests, the jumping mule will attend both days this September. If you have a mule and would like to compete against the high jumper, we can arrange it.

The Stroops and their mule wagon will be back this year as well. They enjoy seeing happy faces as they drive folks around town.

The wagon ride, which started during Civil War Days, has always been free to the public at the request of former museum curator and event planner, Lynn Maples.

It was something that school children looked forward to and didn’t have to worry about paying for. Thanks to local sponsorship, this tradition will continue.

There will be a barn dance on Friday evening along with a pie supper and some other surprises. On Saturday afternoon, thanks to the Doniphan Ministerial Alliance, we will build a Brush Arbor and hold an uplifting community-wide camp meeting much like circuit preachers did in Ripley County’s early days.

We will have many educational and entertaining exhibits to offer this year but, we can always use more! If you have any ideas to offer, we would love to add them to this years’ festivities.
