County Commission To Host Sunshine Law Workshop

Tuesday, May 17, 2022

The Ripley County Commission met briefly Wednesday, May 11. All commissioners - Jesse Roy, Gary Emmons and Keith Whiteside - were present, along with county clerk Michael Williams. Elected officials Terry Slayton (county treasurer) and Randi Ederer (assessor) dropped by, as did county road supervisor Dale Beston.

Roy indicated T-Mobile had contacted the commission about upgrades to be done on a couple of cell towers in the northern part of the county. They inquired about zoning procedures to address but Roy told them there were none.

On Thursday, May 19 at 1 p.m. the county is hosting a workshop on the Missouri Sunshine law. It will be held in the courtroom. A state official will lead the presentation. Any interested organizations or individuals are invited.

The commission received one application for the custodial position at the courthouse. Stephanie House was hired.

The weather was still a major factor in road complaints. Two low spots that needed quick attention were in Jackson Heights and on 160W-7 (Dunrovin Road). Beston indicated he did some cleanup work on 21N-10 and K-1.

The county is contracted to do only grading for Doniphan Special Road District, which has 82 miles of roads to maintain, of which 75 are gravel. The Jordan Road District, which has 52 miles within its boundaries, also has a contract with the county for only grading.

The county has a contract to do all the maintenance for the Naylor Road District, which has 47 miles in its jurisdiction. The Ponder/Gatewood District, which has the same number of miles to maintain as Jordan, has no contract with the county.

Ederer addressed the designation of county vs. private roads in the Ran-Cha-Ra area on both sides of A Highway. She reminded the commission that Google Earth might be free but it uses old data that does not include some of the updated 911 information.

The county uses software that has updated information. The new plat books expected to arrive in early July will reflect the latest data.

Ederer also said the street named Calvary in Wright Park will have to remain that way since it was so named when the original subdivision was outlined, though Cavalry was most likely the intended spelling.
