Taxes Exceeding $1 Million Still Owed To Ripley County

Tuesday, January 24, 2023

Tax season is upon us, and many may be hoping to recoup a large enough income tax rebate to cover what they owe the county in taxes.

According to Ripley County Collector Marcia Tackett, “As of Dec. 31, 82 percent of taxes owed had been paid, leaving 18 percent still owed.”

Specifically, says Tackett, “This results in $1,020,723.36 in taxes still due for Ripley County.”

That sounds like a lot, and is, but Tackett reports that on Oct. 1, of last year, the county had $5,723,903.37 owed in taxes.

She explains, “This figure included current, delinquent, and state-assessed utilities for personal and real estate taxes.”

Broken down by category, Tackett says, “To put things in perspective, the total represents $671,169.33 for schools, $83,619.28 for roads, and $262,370.02 for other county-wide entities which includes junior college, health center, library, senior citizens, and Current River Sheltered Workshop.

Previously, in 2021, $5,679,023.87 was owed in taxes. At the end of ’21, the balance was $916,041.48, which was approximately 16 percent remaining unpaid.

“Therefore, our remaining balance is a little more this year than in 2021.

“Out of the remaining balance, 64 percent is due for schools, 8 percent for roads, and 28 percent to other county-wide entities,” says Tackett.

Credit card and e-check transactions were up in 2022, she reports. “In 2021, we collected approximately $242,000 versus $265,000 which we collected in 2022 (from October through December of each year).

Credit card transactions are made in person, over the phone, or on the county’s website at ripleycountycollector.com. E-check is available on the website only.

Next month, as a reminder the collector will be mailing out the delinquent tax statements.

For those who are three years delinquent on real estate taxes, their property is subject to be sold at the county’s tax sale, held in August.
