D-3: COUNTDOWN

It’s the end of school and everyone seems to be counting down to something: countdown to graduation, countdown to the end of school, countdown to the last day for staff, and countdown to retirement. Everyone seems to want time to quickly pass by. Instead of wanting time to pass by, I would encourage you to stop and take stock of where you are, look who helped you to get here, and take time to truly thank them.

Seniors--You only have a few days left of your school career. You’ve spent 13 – 14 years in school—while it may have seemed like forever to get to graduation, just ask your parents—it happened in just a blink of their eye.

You are just on the cusp of starting your life—things may seem a little scary, leaving what you know and going to something new that you’re not familiar with. Trust me—everyone feels this way, even as adults! Don’t let that fear immobilize you into not taking advantage of an opportunity—whether it be college, trade school, a new job, or the military.

While you may be stepping out into new territory—stop and look around you—take stock of what you have. You have a lot whether you realize it or not. You are graduating from a high school where the staff want you to be successful—they are here to help you not only while you’re enrolled, but after you graduate—take advantage of that. Your community is also behind you. If you feel there is no way you can attend college or to better yourself--there are many agencies with resources who want to help you be successful—take the bull by the horns and contact them. Many of you have a family member, or friend, or a church family that are also supports for you—these are all people who are in your corner—let them help you when you need it.

After taking stock, be sure to take time to thank the people who helped you get where you are—parents, teachers, church leaders, and family. Take time to look them in the eye, shake their hand or give a hug, and sincerely say thank you!

In this day and age, we all seem to be rushing somewhere—but maybe we would all be better off if we would just stop and listen to the birds sing in the morning as the sun comes up or if we stopped to take in a beautiful sunset. Even in the midst of what we see as chaos we can look for the silver lining in the clouds, slow down, and be thankful.
