Circuit Thoughts

Okay, for all you fans of traditional practices, (yes, I am talking to both of you), let’s talk about the TRINITY. As a matter of fact, this past Sunday was celebrated in many churches as Trinity Sunday. I know, for some this is a made-up word and is not found in the Bible. For others it is a point of argument that has been around since Pentecost Sunday 33a.d. +/-.

For years, almost 2000 of them, humanity has been trying to figure God out. We have Jesus we have God, the Father, we have the Holy Spirit. Just acknowledging these three raises some pretty interesting questions. For instance: How do we worship God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit without worshiping three gods? Or Is there a chain of command in the Godhead hierarchy? Is one person more important than the others? If God is one, how can there be three persons? Attempts have been made to sort this out. Some of the attempts have resulted in fistfights and even expulsion from worship.

The Council of Nicaea tried to come to grips with the Trinity in 325 a.d. From that meeting, we have creeds that attempt to explain the Trinity. In particular there is the Athanasian creed, which says in part, “the whole three Persons are co-eternal together and co-equal”. But even good old Athanasius couldn’t fully comprehend the awesomeness of God. The only reason we even came up with the idea of Trinity is to fully explain how God works in his creation. We still haven’t got it right.

Look, I’m not going to try to start an argument nor a holy war on the right teachings of the church. The fact of the matter is this, we just don’t know. God is more than any human mind can comprehend. We cannot know the innerworkings of God any more than a car can figure out what the designers were thinking when they got rid of the floorboard dimmer switch. The mind of God is incomprehensible to you and me.

But what we can comprehend is this, that God loves us so much, he sent his son, who died for our sins. And when his Son went back to Heaven, God sent the Holy Spirit to continue teaching, comforting, and leading us to make disciples.

We may never come to grips with how God works in his creation, and that’s okay. We aren’t meant to. Trying to figure God out will not get you saved, only by faith can you be saved. God’s grace is such that I don’t think we need to figure it out, we just need to believe.

Just let me remind you, our job on this earth is not to figure God out, it is to do his will. And in case you have forgotten what that is, well here you go:

Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength,

Love your neighbor as yourself

Love one another

Go, and make disciples.

See you in church.
