Saturday, June 22, 2024
When The Prospect-News celebrated its 100th consecutive year in business there was a line of applicants eager to celebrate at 7 a.m. The Prospect-News opened its door at 8 a.m. and offered a year’s subscriptions for $1.50, the price paid in 1874 when the newspaper was established, to the first 100 applicants. Additionally, the “payments in kind” offer practiced by cash-poor residents of rural Doniphan in the late 1870s was taken advantage of with a gallon of homemade pickles for the most original offer of payment.
