Just A Few Words From Your Local Health Department Director

Tuesday, December 8, 2020

This has been a year like no other. As I have told our staff numerous times, this has been the longest, shortest year ever.

In all of our emergency preparedness trainings over the years the one common thing that has been said is “you will see the best and worst in people”. That has certainly been the case. People have been so caring; some have been so angry and some have been so mean and ugly. I like to focus on the caring individuals who have brought us food, care packages, encouraging cards and called to see how we are doing, and volunteering to help. I still say Ripley County folks are the best.

Our COVID cases have surged since August. The staff, board, city and county officials, schools and churches have worked long hours to help protect the folks in our county. Do we have all the answers, of course not?? We continue to work to make it better for our county folks. We try to answer all of our calls, texts and emails. Doing this has made long days and nights for all of us. Some I might have missed. I apologize for that.

What will the new year look like? I have no clue. I can tell you I ask God every night to help guide us along the way to do the right thing for our county. It is tough times for all of us. The one thing I know is that all of us have some amazing folks in our county. Look around for those who continue to help folks with no recognition. Doing more and more all the time. I appreciate each and everyone of you.

The one thing I know for sure is that all of us here at the health department will continue to try to help. We will give you information as it comes in and keep you informed as best as we can. You ask how you can help? Love your families and friends this year more than ever. Love and respect your city and county officials, school officials, and churches. Call and have some kind encouraging words for them.

Last but not least, take care of yourself. Love yourself. Rest during the holidays. It doesn’t have to look like a Hallmark Christmas for your family to be healthy and happy. If you go out, wear your mask, social distance and wash those weary hands.

Just know that I love all of you! I only want the best for you.

Thank all of you for just being you.

  • Jan is a true professional. She sends us updates on COVID cases 7 days a week, most times adding a personal emoji of how this pandemic is affecting her and her staff. We appreciate all you do for our community, Jan!
